Bes is an ancient deity worshipped as a protector of households and, in particular, of mothers, children, and childbirth. Bes later came to be regarded as the defender of everything good and the enemy of all that is bad.
The deity Bes gave birth to the name of the island of Ibiza. When the first Phoenician settlers arrived on what is now the island of Ibiza in the 8th century BC, they were surprised that there were no poisonous snakes, so they thought that the god Bes lived on the island. So the Phoenicians called it Ibosim, which meant "Island of Bes".
